What a whirlwind wedding season it’s been!! Still a few weddings left in December, but things have finally cooled down a bit and I’m catching up on all the stories I documented this year. I met Joe and Laura at the CrossFit gym where Joe directs the program. It’s an amazing community of athletes. Usually we see each other in workout clothes, so it almost blew my mind when I saw these two dressed to the nines, walking through the doors of San Francisco City Hall. I was also looking forward to a high-energy shoot, since I was pretty sure these two were in great shape! To add to the excitement, a huge number of guests showed to witness Joe and Laura’s City Hall wedding ceremony, and of course I had fun crafting a giant family portrait to capture everyone who attended. After the ceremony and a whirlwind photographic tour of City Hall, we emerged from the building to find Joe’s father’s classic convertible waiting out front. Awesome day. Joe summed it up best with a nod to CrossFit jargon: “Joe married the smartest, most beautiful girl he’s ever come in contact with. Lifetime ‘Personal Record’.”

I was only with Allyson and Daniel a brief time, but the intensity of physical and emotional connection was incredible. We were fortunate to have beautiful light streaming through the windows, and the building seemed strangely quiet and and still. Every time I enter San Francisco City Hall for a wedding, I encounter something different, and today, Allyson and Daniel allowed me to capture something very special between them. There was another little wrinkle: As Allyson explained her many tattoos, “Three things,” she said, “can lead to a man’s downfall. Alcohol, gambling, and women.” On the tops of her feet, the message was: “Man’s Ruin”.

One of the most exciting things for me is to hear my clients articulate their vision for the wedding day. Even more thrilling is to actually see that vision come alive, and of course to be there to document it! Emily, Yosem and their families planned a truly grand affair for the couple’s day – a 1920′s/30′s theme ruled the day. The wedding began with elegantly-clad guests enjoying a cocktail reception at the Kensington Park Hotel, and then a fleet of Rolls Royce cars arrived to ferry the attendees to the wedding ceremony at San Francisco City Hall. During the ceremony, the guests watched Emily and Yosem exchange rings on the Mayor’s Balcony, as the grandeur of City Hall unfolded behind the couple. A champagne toast, formal photographs, and then the couple and I escaped to do our grand photographic tour of City Hall, while the guests enjoyed an official tour of the building, conducted by the docent. Finally, the day concluded with a lovely dinner reception at Farallon: delicious food, a beautiful cake (created by the bride’s sister!), and a hilarious quiz game were the highlights of the evening. Thank you, Emily, Yosem, and your families, for inviting me to be a part of your day! Congratulations!

After Jeff proposed to Lily (with a plane, in the sky), they built their dream San Francisco destination wedding from scratch, and invited their families and community to celebrate with them. Coming from Maryland, not only did they put on a magnificent ceremony, but they took their guests on a Cable Car ride around San Francisco, and treated them to a lavish dinner reception at Perbacco. With the expert help of Christina at Platinum Wedding Events and her team, the day came together perfectly. The weather could not have been better, and the City was alive – full of music, sunshine and surprises. Our itinerary took us from the steps of San Francisco City Hall, to the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, past Lombard Street and on to Perbacco in the Financial District. It was a great privilege to document this perfect San Francisco wedding with both photography and video, because only both perspectives could do justice to the excitement of the day, to Lily’s radiant smile, to Jeff’s movie-star coolness and good looks, to the affection and connection between the newlyweds. I even make a cameo appearance in one of the pictures. See if you can spot me! Lily and Jeff, congrats to you both and to your big new family!!
NEW! Check out Lily and Jeff’s San Francisco City Hall wedding video!!

San Francisco City Hall is an old building, but to the couples that walk into it for their wedding ceremony, there’s so much new to explore. On the day of Summer and Yan’s wedding, City Hall gave us a lot to work with. Beautiful, warm afternoon sunlight streamed through the windows of the third and fourth floors, and the building seemed to be emptier than usual. After I documented their moving ceremony and arranged some classic portraits with their families, the couple and I were off on our adventure around City Hall. We traversed the building, gravitating towards the beautiful light. Afterwards, we headed outside and on to the Golden Gate Bridge to complete our shoot. Summer and Yan were a joy to photograph because they were so relaxed and so open to playing and experimenting. Despite the chilly evening at the Bridge, Summer bravely meandered along the wharf in only her beautiful wedding dress. Yan was handsome, confident. Summer was elegant, light, and graceful, with beautiful hands and gorgeous long hair. The connection between the two of them was undeniable. My job was easy.

Let’s agree on one thing: The wedding photographer is the modern ninja. As soon as I arrive to document a wedding at San Francisco City Hall, I’m racing the clock. Park the car? Check! Feed the meter? Check. Get through security with my huge bag of photo equipment? Check! (It helps that the security personnel know me…I’m hoping that one day they’ll just wave me through). Then we’ve got limited time to document the ceremony and traipse all around City Hall taking creative portraits. Often, I’m coordinating large groups of guests, or working around events that are taking place inside the building. Often, too, I’m racing the clock (especially in the late fall and winter) as daylight starts to fade. Gotta get to the Golden Gate bridge before the sun sets! San Francisco City Hall and the city in general offer so many possibilities, and yet time is never on my side! Well, there’s one very crucial component to the recipe that makes my shoots a success: The couples I work with. Take for example Tony and Gilma (and their guests). Despite all of the challenges listed above, Tony and Gilma exuded boundless energy throughout the day. No matter how many stairs we climbed or how many transitions we made, their spirits never faded, and the incredible connection between them was the secret ingredient I ultimately needed to do my job well. So, Tony and Gilma, thank you for everything. Congratulations on a beautiful wedding day! And now, I’ll let your words and the images we created together do the talking.

I love City Hall. It’s grand, cavernous, beautiful. But it presents a challenge for the photographer. How do you stay inspired? How do you continue to produce exciting and varied imagery, in a place that looks the same every day, and within the highly structured civil ceremony process? I believe I have the answer, and it’s two-fold. First, I draw inspiration from couples like Clarinda and Wryan, who are willing to play, experiment, and give 100% of their energy to being partners in the creative process. The other part of the equation is my own constant experimentation. I’m always looking for undiscovered nooks and crannies, new sources of light, and challenging myself and my clients to pursue both motion and stillness in new forms. Clarinda and Wryan were amazing to work with. There was no denying how physically charged their connection was, and the photos reflect it. Thank you guys! I’m really excited to have created these images for you!

Anthony and Magaly booked me months in advance for their City Hall wedding and adventure in San Francisco. They currently reside in London, and because of the ample lead time, I was able to help them plan their wedding day here in SF. Their whole families arrived to be with them on their day, and they wanted to make sure that everything went according to plan. For such a large group, they reserved the Mayor’s Balcony, which allowed them to have an hour of uninterrupted time to hug, toast and be together after the ceremony. Several weeks before the wedding day, I had already sent my proposed itinerary for a Cable Car ride around the City. The Cable Car picked us up at City Hall, and we drove to the Golden Gate bridge and Fort Point, by way of the Presidio. After that, we made a stop at the Legion of Honor for some elegant photos amidst the columns. Finally, wrapped in blankets (in true SF summer fashion) Anthony, Magaly and their families headed to the Cliff House for a delicious and well-deserved lunch. It’s never easy to have long travel- and photo-sessions with large groups, but (a) their families were just awesome and full of energy and (b) everyone was excited and invigorated by the sights and the chilly weather. Anthony and Magaly – you guys pulled it off!! Hopefully you’re on a beach somewhere right now and getting over the SF climate in true honeymoon style!

When I met Nicholas, Angie, and their girls, Oceana and Kieran, I couldn’t believe my eyes. This beautiful family was dressed to the nines, everyone perfectly buttoned up and color-coordinated. Black, white, silver, and then the striking red lipstick worn by Angie made it a very elegant affair, and a joy to photograph. It’s such a pleasure for me to document weddings at San Francisco City Hall, especially because just like Nicholas and Angie, the brides and grooms I work with put so much care and effort into the details. The other thing that completely blew me away was how patient and well-behaved the girls were, and how much energy they had as we walked around the building taking pictures. The unique style and amazing connection of this beautiful family definitely made this an incredible San Francisco City Hall wedding. Congrats, Nicholas, Angie and girls! All the best to your new family.
