For many couples, the wedding day is just the beginning of their lives together. Alexis and Amir’s wedding at the Rosewood Sand Hill was, instead, the culmination of a very challenging chapter. It was a celebration of weddings vows that had already been duly fulfilled before the day itself. As I watched them and documented their day, I could sense very clearly the incredible connection Amir and Alexis share. Together, they triumphed over adversity which had threatened to derail their plans, and now, finally, on their long-awaited wedding day, they shone. The sun also shone for the couple and their guests. 105 degrees to be exact. It was a hot, hot day, but the white umbrellas that bobbed above the guests during the ceremony made it even more beautiful. The sky was a crystal-clear blue. Colors were brighter, everything was richer. The Rosewood Sand Hill is a luxurious resort nestled in the outskirts of Menlo Park, and it proved to be a magnificent wedding venue. You’ll see in the photographs just what a fertile, photogenic location Amir and Alexis chose. So many rich paintings and textures, so many hallways and architectural details to enjoy. The ballroom was gorgeously lit and decorated, and the service was impeccable. There was also amazing energy from the couple’s community. There were many eloquent, heartfelt speeches, and even a a musical performance by Alexis’s father (of a song he wrote, just for her wedding day). All in all, I was imbued with a feeling of immense gratitude. How wonderful that Amir looked so handsome and proud, that Alexis looked so radiant, and that their wedding day turned out to be so perfect.

I was beyond excited when Laura and Scott invited me to come to Chicago for their engagement shoot. On the very day, Chicago offered up gorgeous 75-degree weather, beautiful sunlight, while Laura and Scott brought their incredible energy and connection. I don’t get such an invitation every day, so we tried to cover as much ground as possible. We started at the pier, with an unobstructed view of the skyline. Then, we battled traffic but eventually made it to the couple’s home base of Bucktown, where Scott had already scouted an awesome grungy overpass for us. So there I was, like a kid in a candy store, with this gorgeous couple, abandoned railroad tracks, weeds, graffiti and magic hour. Simply too good to be true – but it was! All in all, I am extremely grateful to my wonderful hosts. Laura and Scott not only showed me ‘their’ Chicago, they also effortlessly displayed their incredible togetherness. I think most people simply call this “It.” Laura and Scott certainly have “it”, and I cannot wait until their wedding in September, here in Napa!

Martha and Sean’s wedding was elementary. As I put together this album, I realized that, literally, their day was comprised of some of the most fundamental and important natural elements. For example, their choice of wedding venue, the San Francisco Maritime Museum, placed the celebration between water and sky. As I looked out of the window of Martha’s Fairmont Heritage Place hotel room, I saw the boats in the bay moving at incredible speed. I realized then that wind was another element that would play a factor. Sure enough, as the bridal party and I descended the Larkin Street hill down to Maritime Museum, the wind joyfully played with scarves, dresses and carefully arranged hairstyles. Not to be outdone, the sun shone brightly down onto the ceremony. But most elemental were the community and family ties that united Martha and Sean’s wedding day. As beautiful as they were, enveloped by water and sky, lifted by the wind and lit by the sun, Martha and Sean shone brightest as they were surrounded by their family and friends.
