One of the most exciting things for me is to hear my clients articulate their vision for the wedding day. Even more thrilling is to actually see that vision come alive, and of course to be there to document it! Emily, Yosem and their families planned a truly grand affair for the couple’s day – a 1920′s/30′s theme ruled the day. The wedding began with elegantly-clad guests enjoying a cocktail reception at the Kensington Park Hotel, and then a fleet of Rolls Royce cars arrived to ferry the attendees to the wedding ceremony at San Francisco City Hall. During the ceremony, the guests watched Emily and Yosem exchange rings on the Mayor’s Balcony, as the grandeur of City Hall unfolded behind the couple. A champagne toast, formal photographs, and then the couple and I escaped to do our grand photographic tour of City Hall, while the guests enjoyed an official tour of the building, conducted by the docent. Finally, the day concluded with a lovely dinner reception at Farallon: delicious food, a beautiful cake (created by the bride’s sister!), and a hilarious quiz game were the highlights of the evening. Thank you, Emily, Yosem, and your families, for inviting me to be a part of your day! Congratulations!

There’s a famous quote by renowned improviser Keith Johnstone: “People who say ‘yes’ are rewarded by the adventures they have.” Lured by the prospect of a wedding at San Francisco City Hall, Paula and Chris chose to say yes to a destination wedding here in San Francisco. When City Hall turned out to be quite busy and crowded, they said yes to my suggestion of holding their intimate ceremony in a more secluded part of the building. They said yes to a limo which ferried us around the City, and for the duration of our photoshoot, they said yes to pretty much every outlandish idea I came up with! Every yes, every burst of energy inspired all three of us, and our time together turned into a true adventure. It was a privilege to be not only their wedding photographer, but also their witness, their limo passenger, and ultimately, their friend. Paula, Chris, I am so grateful to you for inviting me to be a part of your day. I hope you had an amazing time in San Francisco, and I hope our paths will cross again! san francisco city hall wedding may 2012

Wedding photography is symbiosis. Brides and grooms find my work, and it inspires them. Then I document their wedding, and I’m inspired by what I see, what I capture. And so on. Stephanie and Neil told me that my work inspired them, and in turn, their wedding at Axis Cafe was inspiring because everyone who showed up – the bride and groom first and foremost – contributed a very distinct presence and sense of style. Stephanie was dressed in a gorgeous and sensual gown, and Neil went three-piece. A stunning combo. They opened the doors for their guests, and their wedding day was instantly filled with a flood of creativity and joy. Most obvious were the myriad hats on display – elegant, funky, unexpected. After the ceremony, an a capella group helped the guests decompress from an emotional ceremony, as Neil and Stephanie looked on. A huge “L’Amour” neon sign – a gift – presided over the reception. I was happy to have the sign in the room, not only because it was simply awesome, but also because its warm, gentle light allowed me to throw an 85 1.2 on my new 5D Mark III and push it to its ISO limits. (Yes, that was a shameless, geeky, gear plug.) After numerous touching, hilarious, even interactive toasts, the night wound down at Axis. Outside, fire dancers began practicing their craft, and I invited Stephanie and Neil to step into the warm April evening for a final portrait.
